General info request before posting specific details

Hi, I'm assisting a childhood and school friend with their family tree and his mum was born in Malta. She met his Dad while he was serving in the Royal Artillery during WW2 and they returned together to the UK when his service was at an end. Can anyone advise how to research a family name from Malta, specifically Valletta, to see if there is family still living there, or perhaps someone will know of his mum's family? Plus, an option to search Maltese records on Ancestry doesn't appear to be an option on the search filter. I can of course provide a name but wanted initially just to ask if this would be allowed.
