Good morning all
I recently visited Malta and made a bus trip to Paola to try and find the house I lived in during the early 1950s when my father was stationed there.
The street I lived in was called Upper Arcade street now Triq l-Arkata .

Would anybody know of someone who has a historical knowledge of this street.  My parents were friendly with a family who used to babysit me with the surname of Rhodo..possibly Rodo. There was to my knowledge a Mary and a Paula and a son I believe .

I am told we lived in Alfred house but I could find no such house. I do know the house and street names were change after the UK pulled out but documentation I have been sent mentions no Alfred house .
It would be lovely to know a little more about this street or even the approx whereabouts of the house if it was knocked down if any of the older residents remember it.

Thank you for reading this

Roger

Hello Roger,

I stumbled across your message ref Upper Arcade Street, whilst researching the same street.

Holidaying in Malta 2025 and wife would like to track down where her parents stayed. A living relative recalls they stayed in Upper Arcade Street.

You mentioned its now called Triq L Artaka, is that a certainty. As contact as also mentioned Triq Guzo Damato. After looking at Google maps I see these two roads join together where a church is located.

Do you recall or know where married military personnel were accommodated along those roads or road?

TIA

Rob

Hi Rob

It was around 1954 to 1957 that we lived there ( I was 0 to 3 years old ) .Upper Arcade street is where my mother said we lived so I know no different. In my minds eye there were fields with goats I think when I looked towards the end of the road but in reality there certainly couldn’t have been with such buildings each end of the road which have certainly been there a very long time ,so my memory is flawed in that respect.

I managed to get to Paola this summer and asked for directions from a couple of shopkeepers who certainly recognised the name Upper Arcade Street when I asked ( I didn’t ask for l-Arkata)

I couldn’t find the house I lived in ‘Alfred House’ and i imagine it has possibly been knocked down and replaced by a newer one ( newer possibly 1959 :))

I have a list sent to me by the housing department of the names of the houses and the names they used to be while the British were there but our house isn’t listed .
